Yeah Toast!

This kind of sad-looking slice of improvised toast represents my progress on the Fryup Knitalong. It was hard to tear myself away from the Clapotis knitting, but I wanted to make Miss Stacey proud. Yeah Toast! ( <-- get a hold of that song via legal or illegal means for full effect)

A Satisfying Plate

My modest accomplishment of the week was finishing the plate for the Fry-Up purse. Here it is with eggs for scale. I went from the Fiesta Tea Set pattern and just kept going until I had a 12" circle. You can't really tell due to the stockinette curl, but I added a row of purling to define a plate-rim of sorts.
Now on to the exciting parts! My plan is fried eggs, bacon, toast or hash browns (it might be difficult to convey "shredded fried potato" in acrylic yarn), and an orange slice and/or parsley for garnish.

Fry-Up Shrine

Muratori, Margery Street, EC1, by Russell Davies
To honor the first official day of the Fry-Up Knitalong, I share with you this link, a shrine to the Fry-Up and the traditional British Cafe.
There must be something out there like this for the American breakfast -- any leads?
p.s., Jessica suggested expanding the saucer pattern from Annie Modesitt's Fiestaware Tea Set pattern (pdf) for the Fry-Up plate/hat base. I'm doing just that, and I highly recommend it.

Fry-Up! Along
When I saw the Sheep in the City was hosting a Fry-Up Knitalong, I said, "It is time to join my first knitalong."
I've had the yarn for a while, and went to cast on this weekend. But looking over the pattern, but stopped short because the pattern appears to be very flawed. If my calculations are correct, the cast-on edge of the "plate" and hat base is 22" wide if you knit at the called-for gauge. Which means the piece will be even wider as you increase.
I wrote to Libby of Creazativity for advice, since she is way ahead of the curve and has made what may be the only living Fryup in creation. She was cool enough to respond with the following recommends:
- Knitting the purse/plate/hat as a flat circle on dpns/circulars instead of a back-and-forth tortured octagon. (Here's one way to do it, but I guess you'd need to do M1 increases instead of YOs so there aren't holes)
- Do some nice thick i-cording for the strap instead of the two-strand twisted deal in the pattern.
- Line your bag with fabric for added stability.
And of course you can make only the breakfast items that are appropriate to your cultural background.
Thanks Miss Libby!

Fry-Up!

"Fryup" hat and purse pattern! The provocative British secondhand bookstore Cult 45, which sells titles such as "I Stole Freddie Mercury's Birthday Cake," has unearthed this one. The only things that trouble me are that the chips look a little slug-like or turd-like, and Americans won't understand peas with eggs. Maybe peas done in variegated white/brown would look like hash browns? (via Not Martha)
