Film Literacy 2008

Defective Yeti's New Year's Resolution is to see all of the AFI's 100 Greatest Movies of All Time that he hasn't yet seen. I'm stealing his idea, only I'm not making a resolution of it because I can't commit to anything lately. I'm only using it to stock my Netflix queue, and as fodder for National Delurking Week (and the last day even, so go nuts!).

delurk.jpg

Which of the haven't-seen movies below should I see immediately because if I don't we can't be friends anymore? Which ones should I not bother with? I have seen exactly half of them -- can you beat that? (Probably.)

My vote for what you must run-out-and-rent-right-this-very-second: Tootsie. It is a classic and so awesome on so many levels. Eighties goodness, Dustin Hoffman, cross dressing ... it has it all. And it's actually a great story. I love that movie!

I vote for Rocky- it's surprisingly good. It is very different from what most non-viewers generally assume it would be like. I also think that the representation of poverty is interesting, as later movies do this so differently.

We just recently watched the Grapes of Wrath. So much of the book is left out of the movie - with good reason - it is a LONG book. I think the reason it is on the list is because of the fight to survive theme. The movie was slow moving and I definitely needed some knitting to keep me occupied while watching

On the other hand, 12 Angry Men is a must see. It's about a jury that argues whether there is any reasonable doubt of the accused's guilt.

There are quite a few on that list that I haven't seen either. And some I have seen and wondering what's so great about them. I think they must have been the top movie of that year, but not necessarily "good" movies.

Of the ones you haven't seen, Some Like It Hot and Apocalypse Now are two of my all time favorites . . . for very different reasons. The first one features Marilyn Monroe at her very best and is quite a funny/contemporary movie. The second one? Might be the best movie ever, but not for the weak of heart. The scenes where the bull is slaughtered and the family is gunned down are almost too strong for me.

Skip Shane and make sure you have something to do if you watch 2001 (visually arresting, but for the 20 minutes of dialog, not too interesting. 12 Angry Men is worth it for the interactions among the characters alone.

Midnight Cowboy. Kim, you must. Really now!

Delurk:

GWTW is just so...Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett and EVERYthing. You have to see it at some point.

All About Eve - just the best cranky woman flick. Well, maybe tied with The Women. Fabulous bitchy fun.

The Maltese Falcon - again, you can't really say you've seen the classics until you've seen this.

Midnight Cowboy - there's a lot to chew on in that movie. You'll want to watch it with someone, to talk about after.

I agree with Ava about 2001 and about 12 Angry Men. That's a great rainy afternoon film.

I can't believe you haven't seen GWTW! Tootsie is definitely good. I have fond mememories of seeing both those movies with my dad.

Since you have asked us to delurk and want an opinion, I will give you my list. You have some great movies to watch! Rocky, Tootsie, GWTW, Saving Private Ryan, Network, Apocolypse Now, Some Like it Hot, Bringing Up Baby, Grapes of Wrath, Maltese Falcon. Movies are great!

It Happened One Night is really one of the best ever. Definitely in my top 5.

I hear Lawrence of Arabia is good, TCM has been playing it every few months, but I haven't caught it yet, and Sophie's Choice is a really good movie, It's a Lifetime movie about a teenage girl and her two younger siblings and their irresponsible mom that always makes promises she doesn't keep

It Happened One Night, The Apartment, Some Like It Hot, and Bringing Up Baby. You have to see these four that are in my opinion, the most funny of the bunch you haven't seen.

Well, I love All About Eve. Tootsie, too, and the opening sequence alone of Raging Bull sucks me in every time it comes on tv.

I tried doing this once a few years ago and never made it past Sunset Blvd (even though it was actually a pretty great movie.) There are still so many that I haven't seen!

you are going to have a GREAT year watching some great movies you haven't seen!

there are only five movies on your haven't-seen list that i haven't seen! (the earliest ones)

i don't even know how to pick favorites from this list. they're all great. enjoy!

i vote for the following, but i would pack in some happy shite in between because this list is sure to make life a little painful for a while.

chinatown (love this movie)

some like it hot (put this in between some of the tougher films)

apocalypse now (disturbing, intense and even funny, great film)

the treasure of sierra madre (i love this movie, greed's a bitch)

the deer hunter (hard core, but incredible film)

MASH (when i finally saw this movie i couldn't believe the words to the theme song... no wonder they went with the instrumental for the tv show... harsh)

who's afraid of virginia wolf (amazing amazing amazing movie.)

the apartment (this one could break up the pain of the others too)

easy rider

sophie's choice (a good film, but i just saw it last year for the first time and it felt a bit dated, i wondered if i would have seen it years ago if it would have moved me more than it did... still worth a watch)

and if you're still reading after this ridiculously long comment, i would add my favorite film of all time that perhaps you've already seen... M by Fritz Lang. all time best and Lang's first film with sound, the way he uses it is incredible.

Oh, Some Like It Hot is such genius! It would be a good double feature with either Tootsie or The Apartment.

High Noon and Unforgiven are amazing, if you're into westerns. Actually, those are two of the movies that got me into westerns.

And Mr. Smith Goes To Washington is one of my favorites as well.

You have some work cut out for you, but there are some great movies on you "never seen" list. I love Gone with the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, All About Eve, and Yankee Doodle Dandy.

I have Yankee Doodle Dandy out right now from Netflix.....it is very cheesy, but I loved to watch it at my grandparents when I was a kid. Enjoy.

oh man! i am jealous you haven't seen gone with the wind, i watch it at least once a year. it is so amazing and you really need to set up a nice quiet time to watch the whole thing. lucky you! i loved all about eve, the apartment and bridge over the river kwai. those would be my first choices for you. i need to do this too. thanks for the idea.

I've been trying to do the same thing over the last few years (I also include the AFI's sublists like Best Comedies (or something like that, they might have a special name)). I have set up my TIVO with wishlists so that they automatically record when they are on TV. I subscribed to NetFlix 2 years ago with the intention of renting those movies but I have been watching so much TV on DVD that I have only rented one of those movies! Of the movies you haven't seen, The Deer Hunter, Bringing Up Baby and The Apartment would be my favorites. TDH is disturbing and haunting but it was very interesting and left me with a lot to think about. BUB is so silly with Cary Grant in Kate's frilly dressing gown saying he had "gone gay all of a sudden!"; that comment must have been so scandalous at the time. The Apartment is sweet and sad at the same time. I love Jack Lemmon and Shirley McLaine. Hope this helps!

This was really fun to read and think about what my own answers would be! Of the ones that you haven't seen that I have, I would recommend: The Apartment (I adore it, and the theme song is beautiful) Some Like it Hot (hilarious) Gone with the Wind--just fantastic, but better if you have read the book, and All About Eve--less heartily rec. than the others, but still. Have fun!

We can't be friends yet because you've never "spoken" with me, but if you really wanna be my friend watch "Sophie's Choice."

Holy crap talk about a total tear-jerker. If you've never known why Meryl Streep is considered an amazing actress, this movie is the answer.

And I am in complete and utter disbelief that "Tootsie" is on that list. It's a basic 80's comedy with Dustin Hoffman as a male actor acting like he's a woman to get a job on a TV soap. Absolutely hilarious (I have seen it more than once), but a top 100 film? Um, no.

Posted by Andrea on January 14, 2008 12:09 PM

I'd watch, in this order:
The Apartment - "you'll laugh, you'll cry!"
Apocalypse Now - dark and weird and Brando-rific
The French Connection - Gene Hackman + awesome car chase scene = gold
Midnight Cowboy - dark and weird and sad sad sad
Bringing Up Baby - the filmic equivalent of a unicorn chaser. I love Cary Grant. A little too much.
Bonnie and Clyde - Superhot young Beaty and Dunaway. Dunaway's wardrobe alone makes it worth a watching.
All About Eve - "Butcha Ah Blanche, Yah Ah!" Creeeepy!
North By Northwest - You've already seen it, but can you really ever get enough Cary Grant? In a so-very-Frahnch striped top and neckerchief, even?

Admittedly, I have only seen a small subset of the ones you have not seen, so my list is biased. Also, my personal favorites never seem to match up well with these kinds of lists, but if I had to pick 3 they would be:
1. Saving Private Ryan - must see just for the pure intensity of the opening scene
2. Laurence of Arabia - A young Peter O'Toole with piercing blue eyes battling throughout the middle east
3. Rocky - Come on, you gotta hear him say "Yo Adrienne"

Honey, stop what you're doing and start watching these. Usually lists like this one are notorious for being inaccurate, or biased, but the AFI compilation is an exception. Every one is a classic-and every one explores what it means to be alive, to love and be loved, to confront the daily conflict between good and evil in this world. To be a good human being, even, you need to watch.

OMG. Best de-lurking post ever.

We cannot be friends if you don't see It Happened One Night asap. Also: Unforgiven and Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. I recently saw Easy Rider and I thought it was very educational and enlightening for helping to understand American culture in the 1960s beyond pop music and vintage clothes.
