Recent Acquisitions

I had some postpartum eBay luck and scored this batch of fabric cheaply: about 24 yards of vintage pattern goodness, meticulously folded. My favorites:

And!
Last year's Austin Area Quilt Guild second chance boutique yielded such spectacular treasures, it was all the motivation I needed to leave the Otter Pop at home with dad and get out of the house alone for the first time. Not a trace of vintage fabric this time, but on impulse I bought this Elna Lock serger:

It seems like a good sturdy machine -- can anyone confirm this? I know nothing about Elnas or sergers. It came with its manual and a thick workbook detailing the five dozen or so different stitches and techniques (examples: 1 2 3). And since I bought it from a guild member, I'll be able to keep in touch with her to ask questions. We also have an Elna shop in town that hopefully can give me some lessons and troubleshoot.

oh wow! great finds. i like the chicken fabric. i don't know much about sergers but, i think it would be great to own one and learn. it's great that you can keep in touch with the previous owner. oh and hooray! for you getting out by yourself. i remember what that was like.

Old Elna Sewing machines are fabulous and from what I've heard the sergers are too - looks like a great find!

That is a great score! I've never been THAT lucky on ebay. One of my favorite things to do - by myself - is thrift for fabric. I do it every saturday. Its really treasured time when you spend almost every waking second with kids. I highly recommend it!

No matter what, you should go to that shop and learn the ins and outs of the machine. It looks really nice! Mine's a Singer which tends to get mixed reviews, but I still have trouble when I have to live without it.
Hey. . .(unrelated) did you see I got a picture with DJ Lance (star of Yo Gabba Gabba) at Felt Club?!

wow, i think i have the exact same serger! My mother gave me her elna lock last year along with the big huge manual but i have no idea how to work it yet!
I may have to look up that elna store and pay them a visit

Awesome haul! I used to have an Elnita sewing machine which is made by Elna and it was pretty indestructable, just make sure it's serviced regularly. My machine was about 20+ yrs old and STURDY.

Oh, great find in the Elna, good machine and jsut like any machine, keep it well oiled and it will perform. Except for the threading, which can be a bear, and the cutting blade, and the general speed, they are pretty much like a regular sewing machine. Good luck, you are going to wonder what you did without one.

Wow! Nice fabric! I am shocked that I did not see those fabrics on ebay and possibly did not have a bidding war with you! Or did I? Anyway, it's been a while since I've been around and the little Otter is SO cute! Congrats! Keep it up with the breastfeeding! It gets better. We used to be in the Austin area, and we loved it. My son went to Starbright Preschool for when he gets to be big enough--and it was SO wonderful!
