Fletcher's Quilt -- Gee's Bend Study II

Here's a quilt I made as a baby gift for Fletcher. I started it when Miss Susan was pregnant, and since they left the gender discovery till the birth I hope I did a good job of making it gender-neutral. I got to meet Fletcher when I handed off the quilt. He is SO cute and calm. Is he that chill all the time, Susan? Well anyway, my congratulations and awe to Susan and Beaty!
It's a "study" of this Gee's Bend quilt by Belinda Pettway. (Here's Gee's Bend Study #1, a still-unfinished pillow.) And here's a close-up so you can see the quilting -- just groups of straight lines that change direction once in a while.
I had grand plans to make baby quilts for the very many pregnant people I know, not taking into account that I would become hugely pregnant/unmotivated myself AND not knowing at the time that quilts are now considered a no-no for baby bedding. Thank goodness they haven't yet been outlawed as floor pads, burp cloths, tablecloths, capes, fort doors, or wall hangings.

Wow, it is gorgeous. Excellent colorwork. and quilting! You are so talented. Seriously.
My mom has already made two quilts - one to fit a twin-size bed, even - and I'm sure there will be 10 more once the gender is revealed (I won't be waiting for the surprise). I don't have the heart to tell her about the bedding "rules"... I figure, like you say, there will still be plenty of uses for them. Don't forget doll/stuffed animal blankets/bedding!

I love this little baby quilt. I need to start on a baby quilt for a friend who loves modern designs and I am very inspired by this. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful! I love it. And you're right: I was really bummed not to be able to use my son's crib quilt for it's intended use, but it's been a nice floormat in the nursery. Now that he's almost 2, it finally got to take it's rightful place in the bed and he loves it.

I too was bummed about all the baby quilts and throws I got for baby gifts for my daughter. However, they were great to place under her wherever she was in case she spit up - it's much easier to throw a quilt in the wash, than to constantly spot clean a carpet! They also softened our hard wood floors when she was playing with her play yard...Now that she is older and walking they are displayed on a quilt rack in her room.

Beautiful baby quilt! Thanks for the informational link. I always send a note with my baby quilts that says that I expect them to use it as a floor quilt. Most of the people that I've made them for are in California and it just doesn't get all that cold. At least not enough to justify using a super warm quilt. Now I'll also tell them that quilts are a no-no for bedding.

Lovely organic design to your quilt & such versatile colours. That's one very lucky baby!

Nooooo!!!!! They will NEVER OUTLAW THE FORTS! Goodness, that WOULD be awful.
Agreed with the others: it's an AMAZING quilt, love the influence and intepretation and quilting. And will probably be well used, insanity with "soft bedding" aside (what will the baby sleep with? "hard bedding?" a blanket of plywood? woven steel?).

What a beautiful quilt - Fletcher's a lucky little guy.

well, harry's been sleeping with a blanket since before he turned one, so i guess we are bad parents. the quilt you made for us has been used for bedding, call CPS!!!
of course, it's also a keepsake that we want to preserve and show to his prom date in 15 years.

just wondering--what size did you chose for this baby quilt? standard crib size 28x52? blanket size 30x40? didn't know...thanks!! :)

The colors are great. Wish I had a baby quilt like this when my children were babies. Where the apples fall in between the blocks look like ring binders. The design reminds me of an open notebook - ready for a life of ideas, memories.
