Patchwork Pillows
I finished two quilted pillows during the luxurious four-days-off-work Austin Ice Storm 2007. One, a Lisa Congdon-inspired log cabin, only with a more traditional color vs. color thing going on.

The quilting up close:

For the other, I opened up my Gee's Bend book to this:

(Arlonzia Pettway, "Housetop" nine-block variation, 1982, 87x80 inches. From the book "Gee's Bend: The Women and Their Quilts," Tinwood Books 2002)
And kept it open on the table till I had this:

The quilting on the first one took for-ev-er so I did free-motion on this one:

Both are backed by matching corduroy and have a zipper closure. Could these be the beginnings of a little shop inventory for me? Hmmmm maybe.
A tip for making pillows (or cushions, depending on your dialect): buy (or make) a pillow form that is an inch or two bigger than your finished case. You want the innards to be really stuffed in there. No flaccid edges!

(You made me giggle when you said "flaccid". Tee hee hee!)

Yes, the tight fit is a must. That's one of the reasons that Lisa's pillows look so superior.

I love these vibrant colors! I must try the free-motion quilting, for some reason it is a fear of mine.

Oh wasn't ice storm 07 tons of fun! I got an insane amount of knitting done. I LOVE those pillows, i just adore making tiny quilts and pillows really lend themselves to that. Great job!

Did you just say "flaccid"? I love the pillows. I have been buying fat quarters with abandon and planning to make my first quilt (crib-size) for my soon-to-be-grandson. I'm scared to death, and I've been sewing for over 35 years. I'm afraid I'll make a color or pattern error, the sewing part I think I have down.

Thanks for this post and the inspiration. I saw your pillow and just thought I can do that, so I did:-)
I made mine like a sham to cover a pillow I don't like much anymore, but sadly have those flaccid edges...
I have to say the Gee's Bend exhibit was a big influence too. Their perfect imperfections are very inspiring!

Those are so pretty! I love the way freeform handquilting looks. I saw a show on it some weeks ago and it looked really fun and creative.

Wow! Your Gee's Bend inspired version is awesome. The offset placement of the center gives it great movement.
