All of a Sudden I Think I Understand the Whole Softies Thing
Now just where have I been? Pregnant-land, that's where!
Yes, I'm ready to come out now to my internet friends (though everyone I met face-to-face knew soon after I peed on the stick -- I'm no good at secrets.) I am entering the second trimester of my first pregnancy, at the pushing-"advanced-maternal-age" of 34. I have been exhausted, queasy, thirsty, unmotivated, all the usual stuff. I'm waiting for that magical second-trimester moment when everyone says all those draggy feelings lift all suddenly and magically. Well, everyone except a 8-months-pregnant teacher I know, she said "don't believe those that say it gets better, they're full of lies."
Other things people have said:
"Get all the furniture you ever wanted for yourself NOW." (First thing my boss said after "congratulations")
Me, to students: "I'm going to have a baby. What do you think I should name it?"
3rd grader: "Jesus?"
Me: "Well, some cultures do name their children Jesus. For me, it's a lot to live up to. What else?"
3rd grader: (thinks for a while, gets look of enlightenment) I know. YODA.
Me: Awesome. Now that's what I'm talking about.
So yeah, apart from being excited/terrified about having a daughter or son in my life in the next 6 months or so, I'm excited (and not terrified) about joining the ranks of you craft-bloggers with kids. I am sure to need all kinds of advice and guidance and cheerleading. I may even (gasp) make a stuffed toy one of these days.

Congrats!!! It is a whole different world with kids - it is wonderful, but different.

Congratulations! How exciting! The pregancy/naming quotes in this post are so funny. I, for one, can't wait to see your softies!

Yeah! You'll do great. And, fortunately, Yoda works for a boy OR a girl!

Congratulations!!! I also got pregnant at the "advanced" age of 34. Being tired stunk, but when you look back on it later you will remember it as nothing but a blissful time. Brace yourself for some changes - wonderful, wonderful changes. Best wishes to you

Congratulations! 34 doesn't seem that old -- in fact one of my DSILs is 3-months pregnant with her first child at the age of 42! Now that seems scary!

Wow!! Big time congratulations to you! And I do hope that the second trimester gives you some relief. It always has for me. And hey - Yoda works!

Congratulations! First time mom at 37 here. Don't fall for the pressure to have to make stuff for the baby. I haven't made squat for my almost 11 month old girl yet. I'm supposedly a knitter. It will get better in the second trimester. Unless you're the exception. And everything people say is true, unless it isn't. Just as with everythign in life. Have fun!

congratulations! woohoo, softies for you :)

Hoo-rah! About the furniture, don't bother. It'll get all dinged up and stained and whatnot. Save your $$ for once the babe is past the drooly stage!

Congratulations, Kim! Sleep now, as much and as often as you would like and there can be no over pampering of yourself with your first child. In my book, under 35 still constitutes non-geriatric pregnancy. Best Wishes.

Yippeee! I'm really happy for you. At 44 all thoughts of having another is slowly fading so I get really excited when I hear someone else is making room for a baby. Enjoy everything. It all passes so quickly.

Holy babies Batman! Congratulations, that's so wonderful! I was 36 when I had my first (and only). Oh, the nausea, blech! I don't recall anyone telling me anything about furniture, and so far I haven't felt a need to buy furniture, so I don't know what that's about.
I do remember being falling-down tired at the end of the first/beginning of the second tri. After that passed, things were so much better. I don't know if they were better on an absolute scale, or just relative to that one April I had to take off from work completely because I couldn't stay awake.

WHAT?!?!?! I had NO IDEA!!!!!
hehe
Clearly, you must name this child Melanie, since I am the one who implored you to TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR FERTILITY and loaned you my book and everything. It's your duty and shit.
Oh, and our La Paletera closed. Sad.

Feel better soon & Congratulations! Yoda, now that is a baby name, but if it was twins you could have had R2 & 3CPO...
Posted by heather on December 5, 2006 9:08 PM ..................
or... you could call it chewbacca??
congratulations! it's the hardest and most enjoyable experience of your life and well worth it all.

Aren't 3rd graders the best? I'm presenting science programs to them all week, so I can relate.
I like the Star Wars name suggestions. We should all make you and the Dioramette some Star Wars stuffies! What do you think, readers?
Posted by Lisa K. on December 6, 2006 12:30 AM ..................
Whoohoo! Congratulations!
:) Haha, you know we're all going to be referring to your little one as "Baby Yoda" from now until the time he/she gets a real name. Maybe even then...

Big congrats!I had my 2nd baby on my 35th bday so I'm right there with you. I teach birth classes for the midwives here at Vanderbilt so let me know if you need anything!
Posted by Angela on December 6, 2006 8:18 AM ..................
Congratulations!
I had my first when I was about your age. A good age to have kids. We're the new tune. In Oslo where I live, the average age for a first time mother is now 31 point something.
If you want any 'pre birth advice' from me, I'd say read the newspaper for hours and hours whenever you can.

congratulations! dang, i sure wish someone had told me about the furniture thing, then maybe i would have plastic storage blocks for a bedside "table". hope you feel better soon.

Be ready to change your tv habits...I have been watching cartoons, Disney Channel and Sponge Bob for nearly 20 years...I have 4 kids ranging from 7 to 19. I knew I crossed over to adulthood...when I was more excited about a new washer and dryer then what was on MTV.
I will also be a disco queen...but now only when I clean the house and crank up my Hits of the 80-'s.
Congrats.

Oh yeah, you'll be making a softie or two. I don't know what it is, but yeah. It happens.
Wow - congratulations! What excellent news. I had my first at 32, so we're close. I hope that you do get the 2nd trimester surge; it's well deserved after the 1st one (which I refer to as the Trimester of Toast.)

Aw, fantastic! I'm so happy for you! And you will feel better, but you may not feel terrific until after the baby is born. All the same, you're through the worst, and the best is yet to come!

I'll add my "yay". Becoming a mom is just the most amazing thing ever. Wonderful, life-changing, difficult, exhausting, fun-filled and blissful days await you.
And yeah, unless you're independently wealthy, buy the furniture (and plastic covers) and start a college fund NOW. It's just amazing how parent-hood makes you burn through money. All worth it, though.

I just want to say congrats!! 34 is not too old. Shoot one of my good friends decided to try her hand at being pregnant at 38! My primary care dr had her 1st at 42 and second at 45! I say it keeps you young (because you HAVE to keep up.. you have no choice... my mom was 31 and dad 38 when they had me.. they are now 68/76 respectively and you cannot tell at all!!!)
Congrats again and really enjoy being preggers. I know I did (and even miss it from time to time).

I also got pregnant at the advanced age of 34, and gave birth after 35. The great thing about that is, I got a LOT of extra attention-like from the doctor-that I didn't get for the other two, that I had at 26 and 30!
I have two blogs...one for crafting and one for family...and just to prepare yourself for family/kids, I suggest you read my BlogSmith blog... http://lorilaurielauri.blogspot.com or just link over there from the ArtSmith one...lol!

Oops! Forgot to say, "Congratulations!!"
And...don't buy the good furniture now. Really. I'd also suggest get rid of all the carpet and go with some indistructable Pergo! lol!

Hey, congrats! I'm right there with you - I'm 29 and pregnant with my first, due June 25th. Can't wait to see what fun creations you come up with for the little one. :) Take care!

Congratulations! Naming the baby *Jesus* reminds me of the Bill Cosby routine when he thought his name was *Jesus Christ* and his brother's was *Dammit* for the longest time.
I was preggers @ 36 and had enough of that nonsense after what seemed like 15 but was really only 9 months later ... she is 17 just yesterday, so you do the math. For this birthday, I decided to allow her to live until her 18th and then we'll renegotiate.
And, quite honestly, it does get better...from the second trimester and throughout their entire lives. Like everything else in this lifetime, dear, you'll get from it what you put into it.
Congratulations again ~ all good things for you and the baby.
