Stitch Austin 2006

Necklace by Birdcage

I went to Stitch Austin last night, the first time I've gone in the handful of years it's been running. It was mobbed! It was dark! It was $10 just to get in the door! But it's always good to see the creative things people are making, and making a living from. I didn't stay for the fashion show -- but you can see Ms. Young and With It's photoset.

My single purchase was the horn and wood-pendant necklace above, from Birdcage Jewelry.

Some thoughts:
- The place was mobbed AND it seemed like things were flying off the shelves from most of the vendors - especially if they had at least some inexpensive items, say under $10-20. I would really like to work toward having a booth there in the future.
- Jewelry, accessories like handbags/wallets/etc., and screen-printed T-shirts dominated the landscape. Lots of buttons and marble magnets too. Is it still really worthwhile selling buttons and marble magnets?
- It's hard for me to justify buying a bag or scarf since I can sew or knit them myself, but I can't make jewelry to save my life. Would you say this is true of most crafters? It seemed like the jewelry booths had the most activity, and that is my theory why.

I didn't buy anything because everything I liked I could make myself...theoretically, since I've yet to get off my lazy ass and actually sew or knit anything in ages.

There were so many people that it was hard to shop and I would have preferred better lighting. I'm glad I stayed for the fashion show though because it was very cool.

When I go to craft fairs I also bypass the textile items that I can sew or knit and if I buy, I buy things like jewelry or buttons (both the type for sewing on clothing and the pin-able ones made by crafters). I'm the same way with my regular shopping - I buy shoes but tend to not buy clothing unless I'm in dire need. I rationalize that some day I will turn my fabric stash into clothing. Some day.

But I do enjoy the craft fairs to see what people are making - and to add more ideas to my already too full list of hobbies. I'm a bit envious but also surprised that people can make a living off their crafts.

Hey it was good to see you at Stitch! Congratulations on your big news. And, for the record, I know you can make jewelry. I've seen it first hand! ;)

Oh, yes, I definitely gravitate toward paying for that which I cannot make myself. Other times, though, if my guard is down or the price is right or I just really think highly of the design/designer, I will take the plunge and buy something I "could" make myself. "Could" in quotation marks because of course, I have a list as long as my arm of the things I am in the middle of making and would have to push aside to complete the "could"s.

Why didn't I see you there? I'm sad about that! We didn't stay for the fashion show either. I was scraed. I bought a t-shirt from Indie Craft Documentary and two soaps and . . . did I escape with just those purchases? Maybe so because I was almost out of money!

I am always interested in buying things I can not make but will buy good design whenever I can afford it.

I just wish I could afford all that I covet.
