Judgement

In case you were wondering what quilt show criticism is like! (To see it larger, try here)
The show is judged by hired judges from out of the area. Your name and your description of your work is hidden from them. So unless the judge was familiar with Denyse Schmidt, she would not know that this quilt was from a pattern. A single judge covers an entire entry category, for consistency's sake.
I wasn't surprised by the ratings -- well, pleasantly surprised by the positive comments on the piecing, and a little perplexed that the color/design/originality was not counted among its strong suits. I mean, that part is all Denyse Schmidt! Well, as Tim Gunn would say, it's a matter of taste.

I think it is so cool that you entered a competition! Yikes. My favorite category is the "appropriateness" of the quilting design. Of course I'm picturing nicely hand-quilted naughty bits or something. But that's just me.
Congratulations on a great job! Will you do it again?

Having never entered anything, it was very interesting to see this! Thanks for sharing it!!

I loved the quilt - especially your colours. That was great putting you comments sheet up - those judges scare me! It must have felt like being at school. I think the worst thing about entering a quilt is hearing other peoples comments, I am always worried I will overhear some people critisising it. In the UK the Quilters Guild has been heavily promoting a course on quilt judging to get a high standard nationally and at the same level. However, I do think that in the end it comes down to their personal taste though.
If I was Denyse Schmidt I would try entering one of my quilts under a different name to see what was said - it would be hilarious to sell all those books and to be told by a judge that the design wasn't up to scratch!

I think it's +++++++, personally...
My last fair quilt entry was downgraded for everything I liked about it, and lauded for everything I didn't! It's all relative, I guess!

Was yours the only "modern" quilt? That could account for the comments. Denyse Schmidt might not be so recognized in Austin...

Speaking from experience, I'm sure the judge WAS familiar with Denyse Schmidt's work. She is a published author. There shouldn't be a problem unless you entered it as an "original design". Generally speaking, you can't enter quilts made from a pattern in a quilt competition. Show? yes. Competition? no.

I didn't think you were able to enter quilts that were copied from somewhere else. Even your colours are the same as Denyse's aren't they? How come you didn't enter something that was your own design?

I saw your Denise Schmidt quilt and thought it was the best example of a quilt made with her pattern and fabrics that I've ever seen! I was truly inspired!!
