Look Ma, I'm Improvising

String Blocks

Here are my contributions to Jessica's Block Swap. The I-guess-you'd-call-them string blocks are by far my favorites. I wanted to do something like this Denyse Schmidt quilt. Interesting -- as I made them, I only remembered the look, not the colorway, and the colorways are nearly the same! So much for improv!

Wavy Blocks

These I made first, just by stacking 13" squares of my fabrics and rotary cutting them without a ruler. I've been checking out other contributors' blocks on Flickr and found myself most attracted to the simpler ones, so I just went with that.

Green/Blue Blocks

Stack and whack, but WITH a ruler. OK, these were made AFTER the string blocks when I just wanted my 10 blocks finished! Also I thought I should use some of the mint green. I like them alright. From afar.

Your post text seems so *understated*. You aren't ambivalent about these, are you? I think the top set are absolutely fabulous!!

Only ambivalent about the bottom ones! I love the others and I think I oughta make a real quilt like them.

These came out so beautifully! They're so inspiring for someone who is just going to try doing it herself! :)

I love the look of the ones in the middle, so understated and the curves just make them. How do you get the curves to lay flat? So neat!

I love them! You have such a great color sense. I especillay like the string blocks too, though the more I look at them, the more I am drawn to the wavy stack and whacks. That spotty fabric really makes them! Teach me, Yoda.

I love the string blocks! I have been saving every scrap for a while and want to make a quilt some day with all the leftovers. Great job Kim!

OHMYGOSH - I LOVE these. ALL of them. The middle ones give the impression of landforms or geology. I'd like to make a quilt similar to the top photo if I ever catch up with the projects-in-progress I have now. And I really, really like the bottom blocks too. These are just all gorgeous!

These are great. Hopefully your 'meh' feeling about the bottom ones will dissapear when you see them in combinations with everyone else's. It's going to be fab.

Kim, all beautiful, love the blues thrown in the blocks in the top pic, and the bottom ones are lovely. I like challenges like this personally, taking something I'm feeling so so about and putting in the effort to find out what really brings it to life. Keep it up, you're on to something.

Stunning blocks! I'm participating in block swap too and echo your enjoyment of the process. The top group really stands out. The color, contrast and motion you create is just perfect. Great job.

Oh no I love the mint ones! But you're right - they don't 'go' with the other ones. But they'd make a nice quilt all on their own. :)
