Finished Project: Day at the Beach Quilt

The Day at the Beach quilt, re-created almost exactly in queen size from the original in the Denyse Schmidt Quilts book, is finished! This one was so easy there's not even much to say. Except that I really love how it turned out. Oh, and two other things:
1. It was shockingly expensive to get quilted -- 3x the cost of the Plain Spoken job and about twice what I was expecting. I've tried to think of it this way: It was kind of like how car repairs go, and at least I have something tangible and nice to show for it.
2. I think I've got this hand-finishing the binding figured out. I've always gone diagonal, which has never been very invisible or looked all that great in general. This time I tried straight up-and-down stiches, as in the diagram at the bottom of this page. It (gasp) lays flat and was a zillion times faster. Hooray!

Stunning! I am definitely going to give this pattern a go. Just waiting on my Amazon order! (The binding looks very neat and flat!)

Now, all you need is a beach. It looks wonderful. The quilting looks great so hopefully it was worth the price.
I took a short binding class at Honeybee Quilt store last year and I must say it set me off on the right foot with the dreaded binding step. I'm glad I did it. I don't think I would have figured it out on my own like you did.

I've always done my binding that way (with a blind stitch), but almost everyone I know does the binding the first way you tried it. I wonder why that is? Maybe because it's similar to needleturn applique? Anyway, I'm glad you like the blind stitch method. :-) Now I'm not alone in my madness.

wow! that is gorgeous. i'm just contemplating getting started with quilting, and your projects provide so much inspiration!
out of curiousity, how much *does* it cost to outsource quilting on a project like this?

that quilt is freakin awesome! Black and blue is such an unappreciated combo...brown and blue is what you see everywhere these days although that seems to be on the way out.
I paid $150 to get my rugby strip/day at the beach hybrid quilt (90 x 75) machine quilted in water stipple. THe machine quilter drew the line at the Denyse Schmidt lazy eights pattern...said it was too difficult. Is that why this quilt was so much more...or is it a larger quilt than your plain spoken?

that's incredible... love the colors, the fabrics, and the quilting. so sorry the expense was so high - definitely looks like a tough design to free motion!

How beautiful Kim! I'm envious of the quilting stitch, it really makes the quilt in some ways. I did a version of this quilt and just stitched straight lines across the entire thing. I worked, but I love this quilt stitch on yours.

Love the figure 8 quilting. one of the best parts of DS quilts and I think definitely worth the expense. On a simple quilt like that, a neat quilting pattern doubles the interestingness of the quilt. the red binding is also inspired.

Hope you are feeling ok about the expense, because that quilt is so beautiful! When I decided a long time ago to start quilting, I ditched the idea of doing any hand sewing on the bindings and do it all by machine (and am actually pretty happy with how it ends up looking). Maybe one day I will work up to trying it by hand though. Thanks for the resource.

It seems to be the consensus here that it's a stunning quilt, and I definitely agree! Congratulations on a job very well done! About the binding: I've never tried that up-down method, I'm going to have to try it next time. Thanks for the tip.
