It's Finished!

Paletas Quilt - mussed

Now this is why I've been so eager for my camera battery charger to get here. My plain spoken quilt, code-named "paletas," is finally finished! I picked it up from the machine quilters a few weeks ago.

Paletas Quilt - with backing

I did the binding the old-school way, by machine sewing to the front than hand-sewing it to the back, a process that has also grown on me. It took a week with lots of time in front of the TV.

I had a little scare when I put it through the wash the first time and found that the water-soluble marker that I used to number the blocks had not come out of the cheaper (non-Robert Kaufman Kona cotton) light orange fabric that I had used. I just put on some stain remover and put it through the wash a second time, and it was all gone, crisis averted.

Paletas Quilt - texture

The best part has to be taking it out of the dryer and seeing it in its textured, crinkled glory.

All the pictures, from start to finish, are in one place now.

---
It's been a long time since I've given an update on the Modern Quilt-Along. LOTS of finished quilts, and I'm sorry it took so long to give huzzahs since some of these are holiday-themed:

Elizabeth of e cubed arts has joined and has
a cool idea for a variation on Unfinished Business.

Karen whipped out a second MQA entry (making her a gold star member of the MQA), an awesome Once Upon a Time.

Samantha has finished a Zipper quilt top in sultry purples.

Blair has a finished quilt: Once Upon a Time. So cute. Read her humorous account of a harrowing moment there toward the end!

Angela finished her Eclipse! The batiks look so warm and fantabulous with the quilted texture.

Mel is headed toward the finish line with her sunny Zipper quilt top.

Rose finished her beautiful Love-Beads-Turned-Christmas-Ornaments, which is her second MQA entry. The quilting sounds awesome. And will you get a load of the back?

Hmmm ... I need to be in the gold star club too. Just kidding, there is no gold star club. Currently I'm getting Denyse Schmidt out of my system, but I'd also like to make another MQA entry. But which one?

Your quilt is beautiful!

Kim....I'm at a loss for words here. How beautiful your quilt is! All that color is just so g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s together. I love the last photo, that just out of the wash crinkly wrinkly state is just the best! Outstanding.

Wow! I want to learn to quilt.

I really like your color choices though I do agree with you that the quilting in the book is more in the style of the quilt. That said, the finished, washed product is awesome and you will really enjoy it. It is just really hard to get the original idea out of your head sometimes. Happened to me on my recent quilt too.

This looks fabulous. The difference it makes in having it professionally quilted is superb. What an heirloom.

de-lurking to say that's the prettiest thing I've seen all week!

Gorgeous colors and the crinkly post-dryer look makes it work with the swirly whirlygig pattern so much better. Seriously lovely quilt. Inspiring!

You girls have inspired me. Good job on the quilt Kim. It was fun to look at the photos of progression. I bought the book. I blogged about the Modern Quilt-Along on QuiltersBuzz.

ummmm, totally incredible! I'm glad you've come to terms with the quilting... I think it looks fantastic! I *really* need to post an update on my progress (or lack thereof!!!)...

it's gorgeous!! and isn't it so wonderful when it's all crinkled up. I definitely like the quilting but that is frustrating that they didn't realize your original vision. next time maybe you'll have to draw it out for them?

interesting about the non-kona solids too. when I took the class at FunQuilts they really emphasized the importance of using high quality cottons. I definitely regretted not listening to that advice (and the prewash advice) on the runny red quilt I made for my mom.

That quilt is amazing! It is making my stomach all jumpy because I too want to make a quilt as beatiful as that. You should be very proud of yourself.

I love it so much! The quilting really does look nice, but I understand it not being just what you had in mind. I really wish I was further with my quilt--I decided to hand quilt, but I'm moving at the speed of a turtle.

I'm not sure how much effort it takes to finish a quilt, as I'm still staring at the one I started three years ago, but I know it takes a bigger person than I. Congratulations! It's lovely! It's pop-a-licious!

Wow, that's so beautiful! I loved it before, and now that it's quilted and all wrinkly, it's even better! Meanwhile, mine is still languishing, waiting for me to quilt it. Perhaps I should send it away, seeing how yours turned out gives me a little confidence...

I swear, I think the old skool way of doing the binding by far is the way to go. I have yet to do a total machine binding that I didn't think sucked.

I was shopping for long arm quilt patterns online today and I saw the pattern that you REALLY wanted on your quilt. Our quilting studio has been open a little over a week and we have quilted 8 quilts. A good time for sure. And a boy-quilter dropped off 2 Denyse Schmidt-flavored quilts for us to quilt. I am thinking of using the above mentioned pattern on one of them. Happy stitching. Gina
